Airfix’s flagship release for 2016, the Handley Page Victor, is now available from the shop priced at £54.95. Please note that this is the pre-increase price and features a saving of £5 over the recommended retail price.
The Victor was the third of the RAF’s V-bomber nuclear deterrent, a futuristic and graceful aircraft with its crescent wing and high tailplane. Armed in its Mk.2 form with the Blue Steel missile it could also carry up to 35 1,000lb bombs or a Yellow Sun nuclear bomb. With the transfer of the deterrent to the Royal Navy Victors were modified for other tasks including strategic reconnaissance and aerial refuelling, and in the latter form it took part in the Falklands War, participating in the long range Black Buck missions, before performing its swansong in Operation Desert Storm in 1991.
The Airfix kit portrays the Blue Steel armed B. Mk.2(BS) which equipped the RAF Wittering Wing, with decals for two aircraft, one in the overall anti-flash white synonymous with the V-bombers, and the other with camouflaged upper surfaces adopted for the low-level role. A Blue Steel missile is included and there is a fully detailed interior. It is a superb model, and completes the trio of V-bombers in the Airfix range.
